Incorporating encaustic into your studio practice opens up a myriad of surfaces, vibrant color and luminous possibilities for your work.
This workshop is designed for artists who are serious about incorporating encaustic into their studio practice or artists who already use encaustic and want to enhance their skills. It’s also ideal for artists who want to setup their own encaustic studios quickly, safely and economically.
It’s important participants have an art foundation and are familiar working with a variety of materials. Having experience working with different mediums provides the flexibility needed for more in depth work. Participants are encouraged to have an idea of their focus; we will explore how to incorporate other styles and techniques into the work. We will also cover composition, color, line and concept.
Basic encaustic skills are required to take this workshop. The next Beginning Encaustic workshop is scheduled for August 28th or you can contact me to schedule your own worskhop.

What you can expect to learn in this 5 hour workshop:
- Safe + healthy studio set up
- Encaustic studio tools + equipment
- Making your own encaustic medium
- Working with wax medium: layering, veils + colors
- Heat source effect, techniques + fusing
- Alternative substrates + preparation
- Carving, scraping + inlaid colors
- Drawing, illustration, collage + sculpture
- Technique, composition + concept
- History of encaustic + other artists
- Resource lists for supplies + materials
Students receive a 10% discount at Muse Art + Design and EncausticSupplies.com. Instructions on how to receive your discount and supply list is provided upon registration. A materials fee is available if you are not ready to invest in encaustic supplies just yet. Contact Rebecca to make arrangements.

Paint like the Ancient Egyptians and the American Colonists! Since the beginning of time, humans have found ways to make paint and adorn themselves, their belongings and create beautiful art. Over time, artists developed their own recipes for paint, gesso and glue, tweaking and experimenting until they found the perfect blend of materials.
In this inter-active, hands-on workshop, you will make your own gesso, milk paint and glue. You’ll create 2-3 original pieces of art using the materials you make and finish your pieces with clear encaustic medium (molten beeswax + tree resin). Because the milk paint is so absorbent, it is a wonderful medium to use with encaustic. You do not need to know how to paint to enjoy this workshop as collage can also be used. This workshop is ideal for any level of experience.
