Found on my Scottish adventures at the Kelvingrove Art Museum. Detail of “Flowers and Butterflies By a Tree Trunk” by Rachel Ruysch, ~1683, oil on canvas. Rachel was the daughter of a professor of botany and her paintings usually depict flowers, insects, fungi and mosses. Paintings like this always capture my attention. I love Dutch and Flemish art era and their mastery of the still life depicting the natural world. Rachel, who also became the best documented woman painter of the Dutch Golden Age, now joins my list of favorite female botanical and naturalist artists along with Maria Sibylla Merian, Giovanna Garzonie and Elizabeth Blackwell. #elizabethblackwell #giovannagarzonie#RachelRuysch #dutchandflemishart #MariaSibyllaMerian #kelvingroveartgallery #kelvingrovemuseum #glasgowlife #scotspirit #travelscotland #arthistorynerd #botanicalart
