The painter Joan Miro is quoted as saying “When I’ve finished something it’s just a basis for what I’ve got to do next. It’s not anything more than a point of departure.” It’s interesting to look back at the departures I’ve made from the Scroll work to the Spiral Installation to the Freedom video to a series of private string drawings that led me to this TEDx painting and stage installation.
I decided to create a painting out of 9 panels, 80″ tall x 30″ wide. They would be on wooden panels but first I needed to test out my ideas. So, I started “sketches” on paper (above).
It was a challenge to get washes on a primed boards vs. the subtle gradations that paper lends to a wash. But, I found that by diluting the paint and layering the lines at different strengths created its own beauty (above).
